The following measures can be taken to curb this issue:
1) Clear rubbles from carriage head to eradicate canon error 5100
You have to open the printer and check closely for any rubble like small pieces of paper or dirt lodged in it. In case you do find any debris or anything unwanted material, do remove it, plug the printer back in and check if the error code disappears.
2) Purge cap lubrication
In case cleaning does not help, you might need to grease up or lubricate the purge cap. It is the sliding mechanism that the printer head parks on to when not in use.
